Introduction The following is a lesson on the Civil Rights Movement, specifically the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in March, 1965. Students in grade eleven, Advanced Placement United States History will examine the purpose of the march, major figures involved and determine the cause and effect relationships of the events the occurred during the march, and the subsequent acts of Congress that followed. The lesson builds on the major skills of primary and secondary source analysis, as well as critical and analytical thinking skills that are taught over the course of the year. Students will also analyze and determine the extent to which the events in Selma, Alabama changed the definition of democracy in America, and whether or not the march is the end of the American Revolution, or does the march constitute a “Second American Revolution.” Within the lesson are several learning activities that allow student to work with primary and secondary sources of all types, challenges them to predict the outcome of events, and challenge and debate others about one of the most crucil, yet often overlooked moments in the history of the United States.
